Bible Reading: Luke 12:13-15 NKJV

Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”  And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”Luke 12:13‭-‬15 NKJV

Discussion Question: What really is the true essence of life?

A man's life does not consist in the abundance of the things which he has. Let that sink in for a moment.

I have come to learn by experience that while it is very good to have the things you want, investments and vast estates, those things in themselves seldom give long-lasting happiness.  Every now and then, they may give you momentary bragging rights amongst friends, and you definitely feel good, but just like smoke, in a moment, those feelings vanish away. While Jesus is not against reaping the rewards of your labor even when it leads to accumulating enormous wealth and possessions, He is teaching us to be mindful of the condition, state, and intents of our hearts while doing so. Absolutely,  God was the One who blessed Solomon and gave him unimaginable prosperity but Solomon's heart was measured and found wanting for all his heart's desire was after women leading him to marry even women who served strange gods.

God teaches us in Proverbs 13:22 that "a good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous." In other words, God doesn't want you to have just enough for yourself, He wants you to have more than enough for yourself and your children's children. That's an enormous amount of wealth by any standard. The kind of wealth God wants us to have at the minimum is trans-generational but much more than that, God is very interested in the condition of your heart and soul.

Obviously, when we have that kind of wealth, it is much easier to finance the gospel and touch lives for His glory. I have come to know by experience that when I extend the blessings of God in my life to others, I feel renewed. I feel a kind of joy that words cannot express. I feel like I touched the heart of God and I feel abundantly blessed. There is nothing else that I do with God's blessings in my life that even comes close.

What then is the true essence of life? Jesus said two things, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, strength, everything you've got, and love your neighbor as yourself.  That is the whole duty of man. If you do these two things, you will be all set.

More to come tomorrow on this same topic. Reserving the best for later.

Stay uplifted in Christ always and live Cheerfully every day.
